Carbon Footprint Calculation Guide

A carbon footprint is the total of greenhouse gases that a person, organization, or product emits into the atmosphere, directly and indirectly. In this guide, we explain in detail how to calculate your organization's carbon footprint.

Scope 1, 2, and 3 Emissions

Scope 1 — Direct Emissions

Direct emissions come from sources that your company owns or controls:

  • Emissions from company vehicles
  • Fuel consumption at facilities
  • Process emissions
  • Fugitive emissions (e.g., refrigerant gases)

Scope 2 — Indirect Energy Emissions

Indirect emissions from purchased energy:

  • Electricity consumption
  • Heating and cooling
  • Steam generation

Scope 3 — Other Indirect Emissions

All other emissions across the value chain:

  • Supply chain emissions
  • Business travel
  • Employee commuting
  • Product use and end-of-life disposal

Calculation Steps

  1. Data Collection: Energy bills, fuel consumption, travel data
  2. Emission Factors: Appropriate factors from national and international databases
  3. Calculation: Activity data × Emission factor = CO2e
  4. Reporting: GHG Protocol–compliant reporting

Easy Calculation with Step4

With Step4's carbon footprint module, you can perform these complex calculations automatically and generate your reports with ease.
